Is Coffee an Aphrodisiac?

Rumor has it that coffee has dark secrets. I’ve heard it’s a slow poison. Some say it gives you super strength. And a friend (an occasional coffee drinker) told me that she is giving the coffee a whole new definition-An Aphrodisiac. Out of these rumors, the word Aphrodisiac caught my attention. But is it an Aphrodisiac?

By definition, an aphrodisiac is a food, drink, or drug that stimulates sexual desire. Coffee is known as the primary source of caffeine. Caffeine is a psychological stimulant that increases dopamine production in your brain. Dopamine is responsible for heightening our senses, movements, pleasures, attention, and even our moods, making us feel better. That’s why we are feeling positive high after drinking coffee.

Coffee-Caffeine-Dopamine, when these 3 are around they create an explosion of feel-good energy and sensation.

The Aroma

The aroma of freshly ground coffee is known to release endorphins in our brain that heightens our sense of pleasure. But there’s more. A cup of joe will spike your energy level, giving you extra stamina during sexy time.

Can the aroma of freshly ground coffee turn a woman on?
Renowned coffee machine maker De Longhi, conducted scientific research about the sexual response of women to coffee Aroma. By looking at various images of men while smelling different aromas. Researchers can measure the women’s arousal level. The result- aftershave topped the list followed by coffee beating natural scent. Apparently, the coffee aroma had more positive results than body musk.

There was also a case study done on female rats. In the study, the researchers gave caffeine shots to females before mating. Those who got the shots developed an increase in sexual drive and seem to be in control of the mating. But then again we don’t mate like rats, right?

Caffeine and Libido

Drinking just two cups of coffee a day could dramatically improve your sex life, a university study has concluded.

A study by the University of Texas has found that men who drank two cups a day were 42% less likely to suffer from erectile dysfunction compared to men who didn’t.

Thoughts

I’m rather dubious, because I don’t always feel sexy after downing two cups of joe, but feel energized instead. Perhaps my caffeine tolerance enables my body to differentiate sexual signals from coffee induce stimulation. Or maybe, the aphrodisiac effect is only applicable to occasional and first-time coffee drinkers just like my friend and female rats in the experiment?

Though there is not enough evidence to prove coffee’s aphrodisiac effect, it doesn’t mean we have to shake off that idea. For what it’s worth there are others who consider this real. It’s a case-by-case basis on how one person interprets the effects of coffee on their moods after drinking more than a cup, whether it is a feeling of sexual arousal or elevated energy.

To which side of the fence you are going to be is entirely up to you. Whether you consider some stimulation as a sexual sensation or a simple perk-up feels caused by caffeine. Yet, for as long as you are enjoying every sip and scent of that coffee and feeling good afterwards.

“Coffee is considered an aphrodisiac in many traditions but there is very little proof that it actually has any effect on the libido. Coffee — like any caffeine-rich food — stimulates the body, which is why it’s usually mistaken for sexual arousal”.
